What's In The [work]BOX? Handmade Alphabet Game

What's in the [work]BOX?: Handmade Alphabet Game

To make our AlphaBoard, you need:

square paint chips

scrapbooking alphabet letters... this is the pack I got at Walmart for $5
(this is also the pack that made these letters on our wall)

a piece of shelving or sturdy backing (or even a science project board or a file folder or....)

Now glue your letters to your square paint chips and glue the paint chips to your board. Easy!

What can you do with your AlphaBoard?

Well, make up your own games, of course! Little Snail spent the morning playing "teacher." She used a paint stir stick as her "pointer" and did "school" with her doll. Which was super cute, by the way!

One thing that I have been doing is cutting up worksheets to make games for the kids. [Two powerful books that strongly influenced my educational beliefs are Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites and Einstein Never Used Flashcards. Read 'em and then go cut those worksheets up!] I went to the local thrift store and bought used workbooks for .10 each. I found some really cool unused ones from 1979!

We used some of the worksheets to make A, B, C cards for matching and putting the letters in ABC order. We also cut out beginning sound pictures to match to the beginning sound.

these little alphabet cards were made with the skinny paint strips that have a lot of colors. I just cut each color off the paint strip to make tiny cards

Big Snail grabbed a paint chip and said, "Hey, Momma! A Window!" And then started to play Eye Spy. This totally inspired me to do this:

Make an AlphaBoard and let your kids come up with their own games. Provide a lot of different tools with it and you will be amazed at all of the reading skills they teach themselves.

In my next post, I will share file folder games that I made with paint chips!!! They are oh, so cute!!!

I was making my alphaboard today and came up with a way to tweek it for our homeschool and wanted to share it with you! I did upper and lower case letters on my board A-Z. On the back I put 4 envelopes. 1)for printing a-z paint chips for my 4 year old to work on letters 2)for cursive a-z letters for my 1st grader to learn to "read" his letters in cursive, and eventually learn to write them 3) for pictures to match beginning sounds, and 4) for the "What is it" card to be kept in. 4 games, 2 children, and a cool, fun to make and visually attracting project. Thanks for the idea! I am going to link to it on my website (whenever it is that I go live on that one!!) writeontheirhearts.com

I got the stuff to make our's today. I got a foam board from the dollar tree for $1. Then I headed to Home Depot and they had the cutest Mickey Mouse shaped paint chips. I couldn't help to wonder what greatness you could make with those!

I love your alphaboard idea. I had to share it on my facebook. LOL. I am in the process of making one for my kids. However I think after going through all the comments I plan to make a trip to the hardware store and get me some of those Mickey Mouse ones. LOL also need to find me some different ideas for the letters. I was cutting them out of magazines but that just don't look right. I am using an old board from a shelf I had that has holes in the 4 corners for the posts that held the shelf together. I plan to hang it on the wall and then have it removable to play with. Art work and a game!! LOVE IT!!

I was totally up all night inspired! I went out first thing this morning to go to the thrift store for some vintage children's books and scored big time for $2! I also found some free pics and some other pics last night to print off to fill in any gaps... I ordered a large 11x 14 sketchbook online at Dickblick and am going to make mine into a book. The last pages will be the "board" and I will attach envelopes with paint chip letters to match at the back of the book! It's amazing how good it feels to be on a creative streak...it should be harnessed!

Before you take my images, you'd better ask me first. I request that if, and when, you use my information and pictures, you provide proper credit and citation. A link back to my blog is nice, too. I love to give permission to really nice people. In fact, I have never said no. If you steal anything from my site, I get to be mean to you. Really mean. And I am smart enough to catch you being sneaky, too.
