Vacation Work Boxes

We are going to be using Work Boxes in our homeschool soon. I have a lot of friends who have asked about vacation work boxes and I wanted to share ours. We have used our vacation work boxes for two years now. Because we are on vacation, we try to put fun, new things into the work boxes. Since we have been doing this before I heard about the Workbox System, I don't have up-close pictures of everything that goes into our boxes. Here is a list of some of the items, though:

  • small notepads/notebooks
  • large notepads/paper/clipboards
  • dot-to-dot books
  • small activity books
  • books on tape
  • lego
  • play-doh
  • beads and string
  • small dolls/cars/animal figures
  • Jenga (or small blocks for block building)
  • stickers as awards for not screaming in the car
  • Leapster
  • maps of theme parks/state from The Welcome Center at the state line
  • magnadoodle
  • etch a sketch
  • travel games (Haba, travel Hungry Hungry Hippo, etc)
  • lacing cards
  • books to read
  • kaleidoscope
  • View Master
  • Wikki Stix
  • snacks and water bottles
When they are older, their vacation work boxes will be themed and the activities will match the place where we are going on vacation.

(Do you notice that movie screen? I used to criticize families who had them in their car. I used to think they were absolutely horrible. Getting one was one of the best decisions I have ever made.)

Here is Big Snail's Work Box (basket). We left for vacation in our pajama's at 4 a.m.

Oh, you are brave! Play Doh in the car!? I refused to do it at home for so long...until I watched Meghan love it with her therapist. Now we use it often. I like the vacation box! Thank you. Your water bottle carriers are pretty!

We have season passes to Universal in Orlando. We also visit my sister who lives in Florida. We also go to the mountains. We love to vacation and take several trips during the year.

I want to make water bottles for my kids so bad!

I have two small carrying cases that I am going to fill up for our vacations coming up. The idea is they can use them as a workspace too.

I made our girls little fleece pillows and blankets, and they love them!

I like all your activity ideas, and I'll be referring back to it when I start packing!

Great ideas! We're taking a road trip down to CA in June and I'm totally going to use some of your ideas. :)

That is awesome! Thank you for posting this. We are going on a long car trip this summer and this will help out I'm sure.

Great ideas. I love that model magic clay from crayola for car trips; it's a must for our girls. I know what you mean about the dvd player. We usually don't use it on the way to the destination, but we do use it for the ride home. Now that the girls are older, they are starting to prefer to read in the car instead of videos...makes a mama proud.

We love our portable DVD player for long rides, too. But it still makes me cringe to see kids using them on trips to the local grocery store or to and from school and such.

We take a bag full of this kind of stuff to church. We don't have children's church, so the worship service can get kind of long for Gerrick. I used to change things out every few weeks, but now he picks what to take every Sunday.

Water bottle bags are a great idea!

Great idea. I'm going to actually pack one of these in our Hurricane Evacuation kit, since we are in the car FOREVER.

I used to criticize the dvd players too! And yes, I agree with you that it was the best decision I ever flip-flopped on!

It seems like you have everything as organized as possible! Awesome!
The kids look happy and busy, and Im sure you can feel good about that.
(Yeah...I never criticize the TV screens in cars now either, LOL)

Very cute ideas. I really love the water bottle holders glad i visited your blog. :)

Great job, Snail Momma!! I have to admit that I thought the same thing about the video player in the car until I borrowed one for a very long trip. What a difference! Everyone was happy- less stressful of a drive.

Thanks for the well wishes!

Love your ideas of the car workboxes, and homemade car pillows - don't know why I never thought of those! Genius!

Helene May 8, 2009 1:26 AM

Wow, I totally love this idea!!!! Our kids always go nuts on long drives so I'll have to put together something like this next time we go on a long drive somewhere!

I used to always think I'd never have a DVD player in our car either but I thank God every day that a DVD player came with our mini-van when we bought it a few years ago!!!

Thank you for visiting my blog. Your blog is so wonderful! I sure miss having toddlers and preschoolers!!! My kids are getting so big. I passed your blog onto a friend of mine who has four children, three of them still little. :-)

Have a wonderful Mother's Day!

Oh, I forgot to share with you... almost two years ago now (can't believe it's been that long), we went on a three-week road trip to thirteen different states! My kids ages then were ten, eight, and six. It is something my kids still talk about! We had SUCH a wonderful time! I thought I'd go nuts driving in our van all that time together, but being prepared with lots of driving actitivies, scheduling out regular stops along the way, and - yes - the DVD player made all the difference in the world. :0)

Thanks for sharing your travel tool box.

Happy Mother's Day (again)! :-)

we just started workboxes and took stuff too for vacation. It made the car time fly and I love using them too!

I love your ideas! We had similar things when my children were small. I would suggest that if you use playdoh though you are ready for the carpet sticks. It is really hard to get out of carpets, now if you have the plastic kind of floors and leather or vinyl seats this is a great idea, but also keep track of them while they play with it because it is also hard to get out from between seats.

Before you take my images, you'd better ask me first. I request that if, and when, you use my information and pictures, you provide proper credit and citation. A link back to my blog is nice, too. I love to give permission to really nice people. In fact, I have never said no. If you steal anything from my site, I get to be mean to you. Really mean. And I am smart enough to catch you being sneaky, too.
