Writing & Making a Dictionary

Here is a sneak peak into something we are working on. Big Snail is currently making a dictionary of circus related words for his circus project. Kids can make their own dictionaries of their own words from themes, units, or projects that they are working on. They can use these dictionaries in their writing.

Because Big Snail is a pre-reader, we first brain-stormed a list of things found at the circus. I wrote the words on a list as he dictated them to me. Then, he copied the words onto separate pieces of paper that will be bound later into a mini book.

Very cute! My son would love this. The circus is coming to our town at the beginning of next month, and signs are everywhere. He's been obsessed with circuses ever since.

Hey Momma! Just wanted to let you know I have a little something waiting for you at my blog! Come by and pick it up when you get a chance!

So important that you are having your kids make their own books. Nothing makes a child more proud than making and sharing their writing/work. When I taught, publishing was such a big step in the writing process. The smile on their face when their book/story was put together in a book was priceless. It was theirs and they did it.

Jessica, it's funny that you say this. When I taught public school, I taught staff development classes at the county level. One of the classes was "Publishing Student Writing." Student made books are my favorite!

That is such a great idea! Some of my favorite things are the books the kids have made.

Before you take my images, you'd better ask me first. I request that if, and when, you use my information and pictures, you provide proper credit and citation. A link back to my blog is nice, too. I love to give permission to really nice people. In fact, I have never said no. If you steal anything from my site, I get to be mean to you. Really mean. And I am smart enough to catch you being sneaky, too.
