Labeling the Environment: By the Kids, for the Kids

If you go into any Early Childhood classroom, you might see that things in the room are labeled. This is called Labeling the Environment. Educational scholars believe this is very important. There are even websites that tell you how to label the environment with certain rules to follow:

  • "Use upper and lowercase letters properly—only proper names begin with an uppercase letter.
  • Words are printed or typed neatly.
  • All words are spelled correctly.
  • The letters used in a label are of the same size, type, and color.
  • The words and letters in a label read from left to right" (taken from Earlychildhood NEWS)
  • Don't over label the environment
I was a classroom teacher and before the first day of school, I spent a day creating labels for the environment that followed the labeling rules. From my six years of experience as an early childhood educator, I can call all of this nonsense, twaddle, and just plain silly. My students never noticed these words and didn't use them. And this is why: these labels are not created by the child.

I think it it important to label the environment. But I think that the kids need to do the labeling. So, I have some new rules for you:
  • Let the child write their own labels, in their own handwriting, in their own way
  • Let the child decide what things to label
  • Let the child hang the labels himself
  • Let the child come up with games to play and activities to do with the labels
Here are some labels that we have in our house. This is an ongoing project and not something we do all at once. I enhanced them to make them extra special for The Snails.

(Don't you just love old doors?)

Happy Labeling! If you do this with your kids, I'd love to see it! Post it on your blog and I will link to it here. [I need to learn how to do Mr. Linky]

Hello from a new reader. :)
I like your idea for labeling, although we don't label anything around our house... mainly because I can't stand the paper everywhere.
I do love the old door a lot!

You are a genius! This makes total sense. I don't know that we'll start labeling at this point since Princess is reading so well. But, this is a great idea for littles!

I'd like to read your blog from the beginning. (I do that with my favourites), but you don't have your archives in your sidebar (as far as I can see). Can you please add them? :)

We might try this! My daughter loves to copy words, but has no interest in learning to read or sound them out herself; this might make a great rainy day project and get her more interested also. I'm glad we found your site!

Thanks so much for following my blog! I just became a new follower of yours. :)

Brilliant idea to let the kids make their own labels! I agree, the more involved the kids are in the project the more they're apt to gain something out of it.

We do a similar activity at our house. I will write the name of objects on post-it notes and they will go around and stick them where they belong.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I LOVE your header! It is absolutely adorable! I used to never understand when my kids were in school why everything was labeled! Thanks for spelling it out for me!

Have a blessed day!

My daughter did this one day on her on. We left them up for a long time but like another commenter, I couldn't stand the paper all over the place! ha ha. My favorite was "stros" for "straws" on our counter. So precious!

Before you take my images, you'd better ask me first. I request that if, and when, you use my information and pictures, you provide proper credit and citation. A link back to my blog is nice, too. I love to give permission to really nice people. In fact, I have never said no. If you steal anything from my site, I get to be mean to you. Really mean. And I am smart enough to catch you being sneaky, too.
