Handmade Stilts from Cans
I think it may have been my Grandmother who said, "idle hands make for the devil's work." I have been very sick the last week and The Snails have had idle hands. I will let you imagine what they have done to our house. It's time to get The Snail's hands busy again. Their interest is still in the circus so our study continues.
We learned that some people walk on stilts at the circus. We had seen stilt walkers before (at Universal Studios, FL) so stilts aren't an unfamiliar thing to The Snails. I wanted to make some out of wood, but I don't have the resources to do that. We definitely can't buy any. Then I remembered what I did as a kid...we used cans for stilts!
I used unopened cans of food, grosgrain ribbon, and duck tape. I really wish I had some colored duck tape to make them extra cute, but we just used what we had in the house.

Stilts are an excellent way for children to develop large motor skills, balance, eye-foot coordination, patience (it's hard work!), and they improve muscle strength.

Oh, fabulous!! I love the mask!!
I found a pair of those great plastic ones at a garage sale once--the best!! My kids love 'em, but have a hard time waiting for their turn. This fills the gap indeed. :D
In lieu of colored tape, wouldn't paints work for a truly customized pair?
Happy stilting!!
That is so funny that you posted this. We just saw pictures of the kids walking on stilts that we had made years ago. They took coffee cans and painted them. What a fun memory!
Oh how fun! We made stilts like that when we were kids! Thanks for bringing back those great memories... :)
Hey? Who's that clown on the stilts? We made those too as kids. So fun. Thanks for following me. Kisses,
Lydia
I remember making these as a child too! So simple and so much fun.
We've got a few pairs of plastic stilts around here. They are a lot of fun! How cool that you made them!!
I was actually thinking of doing a similar project.
Apparently I never actually posted my comment, let's try that again.
What a fantastic idea! I love fun projects that use junk we already have. Plus, if it has the added bonus of wearing kids out, I'm all in. Thanks for sharing this fun idea. Looking forward to more.

What a great way to teach your children, active activities in interesting things. Now why can't they do that in public schools?
