Dictating Children's Writing

I was on the phone all day yesterday with our internet provider because they suddenly broke our internet and didn't know how to fix it. After 3 hours of being on the phone with them today, it is finally fixed. While I was on hold for all of eternity, I was looking through some old pictures and I thought this fun:

Now (33 years old) and Then (18 years old)

Anyway.....

While I was on the phone, and couldn't spend much time with the Snails, I asked them to draw pictures and write a story. Big Snail spent over an hour drawing this picture:

I dictated his work. Dictating a young child's work is important because he can hear me sound out each letter/word as I write it. It will help him make the letter-sound connection and will help him understand that what we write are words that we speak.

Here is his story of his picture:

The President of the "United Steaks of America" and the giraffes were walking to see the rainbows. It was raining and that is what made the rainbows. All of a sudden, a tiger with an umbrella came. He gave them an umbrella. They went inside. There were ceiling fans inside. The President had an American flag. They were happy. The End."

I love stories from little ones. So cute.

How precious! Yesterday my 4 yr old dd drew a pic of our tv. She's been sick this weekend so she's been watching it a lot, much much more than her usual 1/2 hour/day allowance. Above it she spelled "NO". She told me she drew a picture of the rule "no TV when friends are over." I love it!
I'm over from MBC follow me and I am following you.
Love that you home school. I think home schooling rocks!

Hi, I'm your new follower from MBC. I live for writings/artwork from my kids. My closet door has a portrait of "mommy" on it, drawn by my then 4 year old. She must have really thought her old momma was a beauty!:-) We home-school too.

Thanks everyone for the comments on their cute snail costumes. I made their costumes for Halloween last year. They actually won 3rd place in a contest at Inhabitots!

Before you take my images, you'd better ask me first. I request that if, and when, you use my information and pictures, you provide proper credit and citation. A link back to my blog is nice, too. I love to give permission to really nice people. In fact, I have never said no. If you steal anything from my site, I get to be mean to you. Really mean. And I am smart enough to catch you being sneaky, too.
