Top 10 Reasons We Homeschool

Daddy Snail and I are certified teachers. He teaches high school and I taught in an elementary school for 6+ years before deciding to be a SAHM (stay at home mom). It seems as if we would be anti-homeschooling, doesn't it?
We are homeschooling because:

  1. I want my kids to get individualized, one on one instruction.
  2. I want my kids to be in an environment where effective learning takes place...and not taught "to the test."
  3. I want my children's gifted talents to be encouraged, enhanced, supported, and challenged.
  4. I want Little Snail to be able to learn in an environment that is tailored to her needs because she WILL NOT sit in a desk without moving or talking for 8 hours. And yes, she doesn't need medication.
  5. I want my kids to learn based on their interests, wants, and needs.
  6. The educational methodologies I believe in (see "About Us" post) are not being used in the school system.
  7. I don't want 20 kids of the same age "socializing" my child.
  8. We would like more control over the innocence of our children.
  9. We want our kids to learn in a Christian environment.
  10. And...Because research show that homeschooled kids are smarter than public schooled kids.

***Note: Our choice to homeschool may cause some stir and shock in our local community. If you know us personally, please feel free to speak with us in person about our choices. Our choice to homeschool does not mean that we do not like our school system. We have an excellent school system...it is just not for our family at this time. (Because of the above reasons).**********

Wow...and you're both teachers. What has been the response by your teaching friends? I've truly lost "friends" who are teachers and think I'm crazy. I guess maybe I don't intelligently explain my position so maybe I should share your list as that nails it for us, too. By the way, it's been 2 years and my girls are thriving...and they are 12 and 14. I will be reading your every post as it so encourages me.

These are the BEST reasons to homeschool! I was a professor at a private college part-time for a few years and continued homeschooling my kids; it's interesting being in the education field and educating your own! I couldn't tell my coworkers that much of what I saw even in the college classes convinced me that I'm on the right path...college students who can't read, can't write, and taking remedial math while acting like big children instead of young adults. Kudos to you!

I have never actually read your reasons why you homeschool...nicely put! I love the fact that you and your husband both teachers can see beyond "school" as an option!!

Kari,
I'm very impressed with your decision. Having known you, I'm certain that you're the best qualified person to teach your own children. I didn't know any homeschooled children growing up. However, I always noticed that lots of students with perfect SAT scores and Ivy League scholarships were schooled at home. I'm going to be checking out your blog often; maybe I'll get the chance to homeschool kids of my own someday.

Thank you for sharing this list. As a public school teacher my decision to homeschool my children has met with mixed reactions.

My DH is also a public school teacher (physics). He says he realized in college that he could never let his coworkers teach his children.

Well said.

You hit most of the reasons that we have chosen to homeschool.

Props to you and your husband for making the choice to take charge of your childrens education :)

Blessings,
Eevee

Before you take my images, you'd better ask me first. I request that if, and when, you use my information and pictures, you provide proper credit and citation. A link back to my blog is nice, too. I love to give permission to really nice people. In fact, I have never said no. If you steal anything from my site, I get to be mean to you. Really mean. And I am smart enough to catch you being sneaky, too.
